What happened to the Weekly Wrap-Ups???? (First Russians)

What has happened to The Circus' weekly wrap-ups?  Well....um...you see...ah....there's this toddler....well....he's ahhh.....it's like....you know.....

Ok - there's this wonderfully bubbly toddler in my house that has turned into a total hurricane.  Chasing after him and his messes has left me too tired to do the boatload of creative hands-on projects I had planned.

A HUGE Tapestry of Grace binder that the Nip Napper helped to 'rearrange'....this is one of three!

Since our last wrap up, we ventured through the age of Samurai's unscathed and learned about the first Russians.

We did manage to do a few projects with beets.

Beets?
Beets?

Borscht
Borscht
First we made Borscht which is a kind of Russian stew.  Growing up, my father ate this frequently - so, I thought this would be a very special dish for the kids.  We served it with a dollop of sour cream and dill.

Next up, we tried our hand at Batik.  Using the beet 'juice' as dye we first tried drawing on our white cloth with a white crayon.  It didn't turn out.  We tried melting a candle to use for our drawing and that didn't go over well.  Out of desperation, we used the hot glue gun - and it worked.

After drawing a design,  the boys let their cloth soak in the beet juice for about 1/2 hour.

After wringing it out and letting it dry.  They peeled the glue off and....

Now on to the Black Death!

  1. Lisa, I'm so impressed that you are still able to get projects done with your little hurricane. ;D When I saw the binder mess I was like, Oh no! and then I read that there were 3 total that he "helped" rearrange. I would not have been very calm if this was mine. Sounds like he is going to keep you hoppin' as he gets bigger. ;D

  2. Love the batik! If you make "beak masks" for the black death you should save them for VBS this year. ;p
