Children's Atlas of God's World Review

Whether you homeschool or not, a good home library should at least include:

*A book of Bible facts
*A book of History (in a time-line format)
*A book of General Science facts
*A book of Animal facts
*An Atlas

Upon first picking up a Children's Atlas of God's World by Craig Froman I was struck with some similarities between this book and Passport to the World.  Turns out both books were written by the same author!

In this atlas, each of the 7 continents are featured and marked with Christian History & Tradition, major landmarks, UNESCO World Heritage Sites and Biomes.  Each of the featured countries (22 in all) showcase their flag, capital, government system, language, population, monetary unit, area, symbol, anthem and largest city.  PLUS individual facts about foods, people, customs, wildlife, holidays and more are shared.

"Bright!"  "Colorful!"  "BIG!"  are the words that come to mind when looking through this book.

Though this is truly a beautiful and fact filled atlas, I scratch my head with the prominence of UNESCO sites that are highlighted throughout the book.  Because of this, I'm personally not comfortable using this atlas in my home.

Take a peek inside this book.

Verbal Math Lesson Level 2 Review!

Verbal Math Lesson Level 2
"We teach a difference sequence of math operations than those used in school work. In Verbal Math we teach addition and subtraction along with multiplication and division simultaneously to demonstrate the reversibility of both practices.  Objects or pictures are unnecessary for this course.  However, from time to time you may need to illustrate a point by using objects or images.  The decision to use these helpers is left to the parent of educator."

Verbal Math Lesson 2 picks up where Level 1 leaves off.  (Read my review of Level 1 HERE)

Level 2 covers addition and subtraction up to 100 and introduces multiplication and division with all problems designed to be done verbally.

This book contains 29 lessons with approximately 50 questions each.  How quickly you move through them is entirely up to your child.  But, working 10-15 minutes a day is a good place to start.

The first lesson begins with operations with numbers ending in 0 and the last lesson is multiplication and division by 9.

Examples include:
*Thirty-four stray cats gathered on a roof for a sing-along.  After awhile, 11 cats left because they were bored.  How many cats stayed?
*Nora bought two books, one was $18 and the other was $28.  She paid for them with a $100 bill.  How much in change did she receive?
*How many times more wings are there than chickens?
*A shirt has 8 buttons.  How many buttons do 2 shirts have?
*A chef divided 24 potatoes equally among 8 plates.  How many potatoes did she put on each plate?

Though I don't have a child in this age/ability group presently,  I will be sure to use this book when that time comes!

Disclaimer:  I received a copy of this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review.

Weekly Wrap Up: Plymouth and a Finished Fort!

Jamestown Fort

"Hey, isn't that the Powhatan Indian tribe and Jamestown settlers?"

" Why yes, it is!"

"Isn't this Wrap Up supposed to be about the Pilgrims?"

" Why yes, it is!"

Jamestown Fort

Our crew finished their Jamestown fort and wanted to put it on display first!

Working diligently, the fort and surrounding area was painted.  Inner buildings built, changed, rebuilt and glued down.  Trees and forest constructed and figures put in their places.

See the rest of the fort HERE.....

There is just SOOO much possible reading for this Early American Colony!  This is our 'required' reading:

Plymouth reading

This is extra or for fun reading:

Sadly, the Journal of Jasper Jonathan Pierce from the My America Series contained numerous errors!!

In other news, I had some special time alone with just my 3 year old.  After painting several masterpieces, we took off for our local Science Center.

Not Just a Hearer but a Doer Book Review!

Wow!  Does that title describes what I want to be!

"We sit in the pews.  We sing the songs.  We recite scripture-scripture we know by heart.  And yet buried in the midst of this routine are commands and requests straight from the Most High that go ignored.  We've become so reliant on God fulfilling His end of the bargain that we fail to follow through with ours.  WE'VE BECOME HEARERS.......GOD WANTS DOERS."

I don't know about you, but for me most devotionals are so short that there's barely any "meat" to chew on throughout the day.  And in this season, I don't have the time to put into a full blown, in-depth Bible Study.  I have been tremendously blessed by Yolanda Shanks latest offering,  Not Just a Hearer but a Doer !

"These studies began from the overflowing sense of awe that whelmed up as a result of my personal quite-time and mediation in the Word of God.  Because I am a visual learner, I found that the more I feasted on Scripture, the more I desired to apply God's Word into my life by documenting future lessons for a more in-depth study.  It goes without saying that God soon gave me a desire to share with others the magnificent treasures I had gleaned."

This devotional is well written, to the point, but with enough biblical truths and relevant application to be pondered throughout the day.

Not Just a Hearer but a Doer
Not Just a Hearer but a Doer Table of Contents

Each of the 31 days contain an observation, background, interpretation, application and a place to write notes.

Though I am only 1/2 the way through the book, I am seriously considering going through it with my 12 and 14 year old sons, opening it up for discussion and also time for them to journal their thoughts and impressions.

Disclosure: I received the above product to review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC Regulations. I am part of The CWA Review Crew.

The Salem Adventure Book Review

Over the past two years, I've become acquainted with author Susan Kilbride's work.  First through her fabulous Science Unit Study Curriculum and second through her Our America series.

My children and I have thoroughly enjoyed the first two books which take the reader through early American history adventures.  First as a passenger on the Mayflower, and next as a participant in King Phillips War.   These living books are carefully researched and skillfully written.  Think Magic Tree House, but, for a slightly older crowd and without the wizardry.

The Salem Adventure continues this series!  Join siblings Ginny and Finn as they return to the past once again to search for their parents.  This time landing in Salem, Massachusetts during the time of the Salem Witch Trials.

Yummi Pouch Review and GIVEAWAY!

Do your kids like those convenient "juice" pouches, but the ingredients make you cringe?

How about a nice preservative free applesauce or puree on the go, but you forgot a spoon?

Maybe even a smoothie to cool the kids off after a sweaty sports filled afternoon, but it's difficult to transport?

Take a look at  Yummi Pouch -  the reusable, dishwasher-freezer friendly, BPA free food pouch.

I know you are thinking that this product is great for those who have babies and toddlers, but, what about those with older kids?

How about kids that are 14, 12, 10 and 3 years old?

Guess what - I made all the above mentioned food items from scratch without breaking the bank AND my "babies" didn't feel that they were babies at all by drinking from these unique gadgets!

Homemade 'applesauce' with carrots

This is my 3 year old and the only one of my "babies" to have grown up using those 'cute, one-use' store bought pouch packages.  He was estactic with his Yummi Pouch!

Smoothies on the go?  SURE!

I wondered if my older "babies" would feel uncomfortable drinking from these pouches in public.  NOPE!  They didn't mind it at all because they can now have their favorite smoothie or blended yogurt on the go without hassle and mess!

Wash in the dishwasher or by hand.  Air dry upside down.

I personally love these pouches.  They are so easy to fill, use and clean PLUS incredibly portable for our busy lifestyle.  Just fill, throw them into a cooler and away you go!

In fact, I'd love to have a slightly bigger size for myself for green drinks on the go and protein shakes.

These would make a fabulous baby shower or Christmas gift for those who have kids.

And you can enter to win a set of 6 Yummi Pouches for your own use!

Early English Colonies in America: Jamestown

In other news we met up with our homeschool group at the local bowling alley for a morning of bowling fun.  A strong storm blew in and two of our families had a close encounter with the awesome force of electricity when the front doorway of the building was struck with lightning literally feet from where they were standing.  The lightning traveled through the door frame and down into the foundation causing the floor tiles near the door to burst into bits or melt!  Fortunately no one was hurt and we rejoice in God's protection of these moms and their children!

Join us next week for the completion of Jamestown and visiting with The Pilgrims!

The Storybook cd-rom Review

Storybook cd-rom Review

The Storybook cd-rom is a delightfully sweet, digital accompaniment to The Reading Lesson.  This optional item contains 40 stories that also appear in the Reading Lesson text.  Starting from easy and increasing in complexity, these stories are meant to be read by the child and not played straight from the computer.  Unfamiliar words can be clicked upon and some cute animation is shown as well.

Spies of The Revolutionary War Writing Lessons and Lapbook - Review & Giveaway!

Last year my 9 year old daughter and I reviewed  New Millennium Girls Writing Bundle  by Jan May and had a blast!  Unfortunately my 12 year old son was bummed that there wasn't a "less girlie" study for him.  One filled with spying, intrigue, war and strategy.  Kind of like the new Spies of the Revolutionary War Writing Lessons & Lapbook!

Spies of The Revolutionary War Writing Lessons and Lapbook
Step back in history, grab your quill pen and parchment and live like a spy during the American Revolutionary War.

Spies of Revolutionary War contains 6 unit lessons to be worked on once or twice a week with educational, writing and hands-on activities such as journaling, role playing, cipher writing, brainstorming for plot, crafts and more.  Additionally, exercises are provided to aid in style and adding more detail.

In preparation for writing, pre-Revolutionary War background information is given as far as historical data and biographies of key players.  Then there are step by step instructions on how to create a spy character including drawing a picture of your spy.

To help aid the creative process for those who are writing resistant, after each section, a writing time activity is included where you add a paragraph from where you previously left off.

Spies of The Revolutionary War Writing Lessons and Lapbook

The lapbook portion of this study is easy to put together.  Colorful and captivating!  Included are places for Revolutionary War info and the created spy character.

Spies of The Revolutionary War Writing Lessons and Lapbook

There's just enough detail and activity to hold a boy's interest!  And believe me, I know one 12 year old that is VERY interested!
Spies of The Revolutionary War Writing Lessons and Lapbook

Since this will fit in perfectly with our Tapestry of Grace Year 2 curriculum, I will be saving this until we hit the Revolutionary War time period. I will also be blogging about our progress in our "Weekly Wrap Ups".

Are you interested too?  Great!  You can enter to win a free download of this same study and lapbook!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

I received a free download of this item in exchange for an honest review.  There will be no other compensation.

Get Real: Stop Hiding Behind the Mask Book Review!

"Who are you?  This is not necessarily the same person that everyone else sees everyday.  I am talking about the real you.  The one you are when no one is watching, and your mask is put away."

Do you know your true identity in Christ?  Forgiven, set free, accepted, holy, made new, loved, confident, and victorious. Author Jamy Whitaker does a  great job of outlining and expounding on these qualities.
"Get Real examines just that, how to take off the mask and be who God created you to be without fear."

This study is divided into three parts:  identity, insecurities and perspective.  Discussion questions at the end of each chapter are also provided to help search the heart.

In the chapter on masks, the author writes:

"We tend to wear masks, so people see what we think they want to see.  We are so scared that people will not like us or that they will judge us, so we hide behind a mask.  The mask gives us security to keep our true, vulnerable self locked deep inside.  The sad thing is we wear masks not only for the public, but also sometimes at home with our families and even with God."

I can totally identify with this statement!

The book then encourages the reader to step out, take risks, and be stretched with Biblical examples from Abraham and Peter.  The ultimate goal is living with eternal perspective no matter what your calling!

I chose to review this book based on my own experience wearing a mask.  In some circles, I don't feel able to present myself as "less than perfect".  The first section of this book really spoke to my heart in this area  and was a blessing to read.

Disclosure: I received the above product to review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC Regulations. I am part of The CWA Review Crew.
